Competition to secure the ranging for the Apple iPad is expected to be fierce, with Orange a potential frontrunner at present. While the Apple iPad does not allow for mobile phone calls, its expansive 10” touch screen provides users with the ability to view web pages, video and digitised newspapers and magazines – making it a leading mobile working device.

Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, said: “The iPad is something completely new. We’re excited for customers to get their hands on this magical and revolutionary product and connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”

The sheer mass of mobile accessories related to the Apple iPad will make this a very unique and interesting device to use. With over 150,000 applications available from the Apple App Store and completely remodelled iWork software the ability to create word documents, spreadsheets and presentations on the move has never been easier.

New Fixed Networks research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research – With a estimated 73.544mn mobile subscribers in the Philippines market at the end of June 2009, penetration rates in the country had reached 80.5%, which was up from 76% in 2008.

In contrast 2008 reported a 12.41 percentage point increase in its penetration rate, so that growth in the mobile sector appears to be slowing down. Indeed, during Q209, there were just 1.68mn net additions. This was significantly lower than the 3.808mn reported in the previous quarter, and compared to 3.829mn net additions in Q208. The slowdown in mobile subscriber growth was due to Globe Telecom, which had begun to discount inactive subscribers from its base in Q209, following its 120-day rule.

This led to the operator removing 713,000 subscribers to reach 25.024mn and led to a reduced market share of 24.18%, down from 25% in the previous year. Aggressive promotional activity, and with all three major operators – Smart Communications, Globe Telecom and Sun Cellular – offering unlimited tariffs, has essentially led to a significant proportion of the market base being inactive.

By dismissing inactive subscribers from their customer bases, this allows operators to recycle old phone numbers and allows for new customers to join their networks. For the most part, new growth is being found in rural areas, where improvements in network coverage are required. That said, with rural customers subscribing to prepaid services and therefore spending less than a postpaid user, this has had a negative impact on ARPUs. According to BMI forecasts, after reporting a market average of PHP175.1 in 2008, following a decline of 13.7% in the year, we expect that 2009 will suffer a further fall of 23.4%, before reaching PHP134.1.

The growth of 3G, which would see customers access a number of non-voice applications, should surely lead to an improvement in ARPUs. However, given that prepaid growth is set to continue – accounting for 85% of the total in Q209 – we would expect to see falls in ARPU but at a slower rate so that, by 2014, the market average will be PHP97.8. There is also a growing focus on the broadband market, and in particular wireless broadband, which will allow rural communities greater access. One such application, offered over mobile broadband, is mobile banking, with PLDT said to have over 1mn subscribers through its numerous agreements with banks. Operators are also looking to bring third party agents on board and by expanding mobile banking through the use of third-party agents such as convenience stores. An improvement to broadband is expected to help strengthen the country’s economy, particularly as it looks to international markets, with a focus on its call centre industry.

Blackberry Storm2 is available at T-Mobile. The handset Blackberry Storm2 for £35 per month contract over 2 years that includes 600 minutes, 500 texts, unlimited internet and Blackberry internet included. T-Mobile have already declared that the RIM BlackBerry storm 2 9550 will be available in February ,embedded in the announcement is also Phil Lander, T-Mobile account director at RIM, confirming that RIM will launch their official Twitter client soon.

The manufacturer went with the smartphone, no new roads, because that unit has been further optimized and large experiments was largely abandoned. The errors of the first Storm are now a thing of the past, the new Storm not only offers an improved SurePress technology, but also WLAN, HSDPA, GPS, Bluetooth, a 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash as well as 1 gigabytes of internal memory.
BlackBerry supports A-GPS and geotagging can find streets and places so much easier. However, this is not enough to replace a navigation system to be fully satisfying.

The bar phone comes with dimensions of 112.5 x 62.2 x 13.95 mm on the market. For many users, this phone is, however, pose a serious problem, because the unit weighs whopping 160 grams, which is significantly harder than the competition.
The OS here is the BlackBerry itself and is called the BlackBerry OS. The platform is a proprietary development. If the system version 5 to the BlackBerry OS is used.

In the CDMA network standard, CDMA2000, GSM 1800, shall, 1900, 850 and GSM 900 for a better reception. UMTS makes for a good reception at this point the standard W-CDMA.

Truly outstanding is the built-in battery. The Li-ion battery is at a maximum power of 1400 mAh, thus creating a standby time of 270 hours and a maximum talk time of 500 minutes. For a BlackBerry, which has generally always been a slightly smaller display, it is very important to deliver a really good performance.

The TFT LCD screen and a maximum resolution of 360 x 480 pixels making it ever a good beginning has been made. 3.25 inches on the large display can loosely be described up to 65,536 different colors.

The advanced smartphone features besides a really nice digital camera on the back of the phone. The maximum resolution is 2048 x 1536 pixels. For the user, further advantages in the handling by the built-in LED flash and the 2-fold zoom.

So users can shoot plenty of photos and can store many different files on the phone, is a 2000 MB internal dynamic memory be for cutting. Extends to them the memory is still not, they can easily expand this by card, here in the formats microSD, microSD and TransFlash.

The built-in with 256 MB of RAM is also very neatly fitted and works with the processor quickly and easily, without much stuttering and similar difficulties.Mobile TV over UMTS receive them, unfortunately, is on the entertainment media, a radio, not present. After all, subscribers can use over the 3.5-mm jack plug their own headphones.

If users want to expand the comprehensive phone book yet, then they begin to equal the best in their contacts, because they can not just add a picture or e-mail addresses their loved ones, but also add a few more numbers and assign special ring tone to the contact.

Among the usual functions as a calendar, scheduler, alarm clock and voice control, and the speakerphone and the stopwatch. Users can read with a mobile phone via the Document Reader entire Excel, PDF, PowerPoint and Word files in peace.

An MP3 player is also available to them, can create playlists as desired quickly and dominates all popular formats. Even Cover Arts are displayed and quickly synchronized.

If we are in our last point of connectivity to the mobile Internet. They come over GPRS, EDGE and HSDPA into the net. Via wireless connection to the Internet. Only with HSCSD and HSUPA, the BlackBerry Storm 2 9550 cannot serve
to connect with other external devices, Bluetooth 2.1 EDR provides a maximum range of 10 meters.

HTC Smartphones – HTC Legend to Take Over Mantel from HTC Hero – With HTC pushing hard to encourage its portfolio into the mainstream area of the market, the sleek, curvy design of the HTC Legend will turn more than a few heads.

The lightweight aluminium shell of the handset creates a design and feels reminiscent to that of the Apple MacBook Pro. However, there are still remnants of the successful HTC Hero design, with the unforgettable ‘chin’ still present.

As the phone is integrated with the latest Android 2.1 software, the HTC Legend is fully controllable via voice, supports multi-touch usage and its upgrade of RAM from 288MB to 384MB will enable users to use a significant number of applications simultaneously.

The multi-touch option allows users to navigate and switch between home-screens, as well as inviting swift and clinical use for e-mail and web pages, with the ability to zoom in and zoom out on images and text alike.

Perhaps the most innovative addition to the HTC Sense interface is the brand new Friendstream application, bringing together all forms of social media, including Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and additional contacts to allow users to keep their finger on the pulse socially – a news feed of status updates across all platforms can be accessed at the touch of a button.

With the HTC Legend in line for release on the UK market at the beginning of Q2, the Legend could truly become a figurehead for mainstream HTC smartphones.

Sony Ericsson have announced their long awaited arrival into the android phone market with the forthcoming release of their new Xperia X10 handset. And at first glance it seems that not only have they joined the race, but they look to be setting the pace.

The Xperia X10 measure in at 119 x 63 x 13mm and weighs 130 grammes, so far pretty standard for an Android based device. The handset incorporates a 4″ TFT screen with an impressive 480 x 854 resolution. The screen is a capacitive touchscreen with the handy addition of having a scratch resistant surface, a feature which has long been desired on the new breed of large screened devices. Auto rotate functions are possible due to the built in accelorometer chip.

Sony Ericsson have introduced a new interface on this model. Named the UX, short for User Experience, it is aimed to make the day to day use of the phone, easy and fun. It groups all media, social networks and contacts neatly together making each file or app easy to find and navigate to and from. For example, if you call up a name on your contacts list, you can then expand this tile and further information will be displayed about that person. This information includes the display of photos they’re tagged in, history of text messages and updates on their social networking accounts. It is a neat feature and I can see it becoming widely used in many future handset models. The 1Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor the Xperia 10 houses is quick, not only for loading apps but also for browsing and general multimedia use. The multimedia facilities are neatly grouped together.

Perhaps the most standout feature of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is its hugely impressive camera facility. Boasting a huge resolution of 8.1 mega pixels, the resulting images not only suffice when viewing on the device but also look clear and detailed when enlarged on a PC or printed. An auto focus help keep the pictures sharp and other features include an LED flash, face recognition and smile detection. Video capture is also supported complete with a quite rare video light for darker scenes.

Anybody hoping for a physical qwerty keypad will be disappointed, in an effort to maintain the slim profile Sony Ericsson have incorporated the keypad into the touch screen. 1GB of internal memory is incorporated in the Xperia X10, and an 8GB micro SD card is included, but for those who require more can purchase up to an additional 16GB.

Sony Ericsson have given us a lot to look forward too with the Xperia X10. The stylish, slim design coupled with Google’s Android platform and a revolutionary user interface make this THE phone to watch for the first part of 2010.

Mobile commerce (m-commerce) is basically an extension of e-commerce on the mobile phone which enables consumers to make payments for goods and services directly from their mobile phones. This gives the consumer the benefit of making payments from anywhere without the hassle of physically being present at a store, standing in a line or turning on a PC to transact online.

m-commerce replaces wallet
An m-commerce consumer has the flexibility to use the mobile phone as a replacement to a wallet and make payments at a physical location, online or even remotely. Users can buy movie and flight tickets, pay utility bills, recharge their prepaid mobile balances, book hotels and cars, send gift vouchers and even donate to charity directly from their mobile phones thereby eliminating the process of using credit cards for online shopping, thus making the transaction far more secure.

The payments can be made by authenticating payments through mobile services providers using the mobile phone via SMS, GPRS, BREW and IVR.

The only difference between e-commerce and m-commerce is that while e-commerce is limited to PC users with an internet connection, m-commerce can use technologies as simple as SMS and IVR among other things therefore being available to the entire mobile carrying population. With mobile penetration at 10 times of the PC penetration, and expected to become one billion by 2012, it won’t be long before India will become a very large player in the m-commerce space — explaining why many people see m-commerce akin to e-commerce on steroids!

Easy payments
The main benefit is the convenience of making a payment from anywhere in addition to providing an additional layer of security over existing banking instruments. The mobile payment solution not only provides a comprehensive platform with a vast ecosystem of online and physical merchants, travel and entertainment verticals, billers and banks accessible from any handset or operator, it ensures utmost simplicity while factoring in high security standards across the entire transaction life-cycle.

Secure transactions
Security is a major issue addressed by m-commerce as its service provides complete security in transactions — PCI DSS 1.2, PA-DSS and Union government’s Cert-IN certified. These are the most stringent security standards adopted by the global payments industry. Mobile transactions through the service providers add an additional layer of security enabling a customer to make a purchase without ever revealing any sensitive information.

Every transaction is authorised with a four digit PIN which is punched into the customer’s mobile phone over an automatic, secure IVR call-back and there is no manual intervention whatsoever. This process ensures that there is complete control and security and practically eliminating the chances for frauds. Even if the mobile were to get stolen there is so no way that one can misuse the account without the PIN.

RBI hikes transaction limit
A year from its issue of a set of guidelines for mobile banking transactions, the RBI has provided a fertile environment for mobile payments by revising the guidelines and raising the transaction limit to Rs 50,000 per day for purchase of goods and services from the earlier cap of Rs 10,000. To facilitate the use of mobile phones for remittances of cash, RBI has even allowed banks to provide fund transfer services from the accounts of their customers for delivery in cash to the recipients.

Easy fund transfer
The disbursal of funds to receiver can be facilitated at automated teller machines (ATMs) or through business correspondents appointed as agents by the banks. The maximum value of such transfers is capped at Rs 5,000 per transaction and customers can remit a maximum of Rs 25,000 per month through this service.

The new guidelines mean that the process of P2P money transfer will become even faster and easier. As the receiver no longer needs to have a bank account as a pre-requisite, he or she can simply collect cash at the nearest bank or business correspondent. This opens the market up in terms of the number of people you can transfer money to in an instant as one is no longer limited to intra-bank transfers.

The mobile payment solutions provider has always been an advocate of using the SMS as the transaction authorisation protocol for all financial transactions over the mobile. On the financial inclusion side, if we go strictly by Dr Raghu Raman’s recommendations of creating a National Electronic Financial Inclusion System (NEFIS), then the backbone of such a system would be in its ability to carry out small value transactions (Rs 100) at limited transaction cost (sub Rs 1). And, the only way that can be done on a mass acceptable basis is via SMS, which is the single most pervasive feature in the mobile technology revolution, cutting across all SECs, geographies, handset vendors, MNOs, etc.

Motorola, Inc. has broadened its enterprise mobility portfolio to better enable retailers to streamline operations, increase sales, improve customer loyalty and gain competitive advantage. With new mobile computing, voice and RFID solutions, Motorola is empowering store associates with access to better information to make better decisions – ultimately transforming the customer experience.

“Motorola is committed to delivering the future of retail today by helping retailers forge new connections with customers,” said Frank Riso, senior director of retail, Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions. “With our diverse portfolio of enterprise solutions, Motorola enables retail associates to work smarter, improve productivity, stay connected and give customers the shopping experience they want.”

Some of the latest retail solutions that will be featured in Motorola’s booth include the following.

* Motorola’s off-the-shelf, ready to deploy CLP two-way radio is uniquely designed for comfort, durability and ease-of-use to provide reliable, instant push-to-talk (PTT) communication in demanding retail, restaurant and hospitality environments. Measuring the width and length of a standard business card, CLP is the smallest and lightest two-way radio in its class and can be used for requesting a price-check on the retail floor, coordinating hotel employees to instantly respond to concierge or housekeeping requests or assisting diners to the correct seat at a busy restaurant. The CLP can be used both indoors and outdoors and, when paired with the new Motorola RPX Portable Repeater, it provides users with increased coverage to ensure consistent uninterrupted communication.
* Motorola’s TEAM badge (EWB100) mobilizes communications by meeting customer demand for high-quality PTT voice connectivity over the enterprise WLAN to mobile workers. Simple to use and weighing less than two ounces, the new EWB100 VoWLAN device streamlines task management and improves productivity – allowing associates to address issues, answer questions, obtain a task or report completion of a task right on the spot. The EWB100 also features the TEAM Express voice client, creating instant interoperability with other TEAM Express devices including a wide range of Motorola voice-enabled mobile computers, TEAM VoWLAN devices and two-way radios (with TEAM Radio Link Solution) to extend communications and the return on investment.
* Motorola’s MC3100 series of mobile computers offer advanced computing power, industry-leading data capture options, enterprise-class motion sensing capabilities, and the most versatile form factor for mid-range mobile computing. Designed for key-based and touch-screen applications such as price/stock management, inventory control, returns processing, and shipping and receiving, the MC3100 series will help retailers, streamline business processes, improve employee productivity and enhance customer service and satisfaction.
* Supporting RFID Gen 2 technology, the Motorola MC3090-Z RFID handheld reader incorporates the industry’s first dual-axis antenna resulting in longer and wider read ranges for more accurate, rapid capture of tag data – ideal for item-level applications such as retail cycle-counting, inventory and asset tracking. This high-performance RFID handheld reader also provides the ability to scan bar codes – reducing the number of devices organizations need to purchase and manage.
* Retailers can now conduct mobile point of sale (mPOS) transactions with the Mobile Payment Module with Chip and PIN attachment for Motorola’s MC70/75 mobile computers. The Mobile Payment Module adds the payment function to the mPOS solution for credit cards with its magnetic stripe reader (MSR), debit cards with its secure manual PIN entry, and now chip and PIN payment cards. It also meets the approvals for the latest global data security standards.
* Rugged mobility solutions aimed at improving the productivity of warehouse workers – Motorola’s WT4090 Voice-only Wearable (VOW) Terminal and its RCH50 Rugged Cabled Headset can replace paper-based processes with voice-directed solutions resulting in real-time processing, reduced errors and improved decision making. The WT4090 VOW is a hands-free, voice-directed, task-specific tool that offers comprehensive wireless network connectivity, high-power processing and robust voice features including support for voice-recognition, text-to-speech engines and Voice-over WLAN (VoWLAN). Designed for comfort, hygiene and safety, the ergonomic RCH50 is Motorola’s lightweight, cabled headset that provides full shift comfort and enables hands-free, voice-directed mobility solutions.
