PlaySpan has announced the launch of UltimatePay Mobile, a “virtual currency and micropayments monetization widget for leading smartphone platforms.” The initial private beta launch will support HTML5, and is designed to work on all Android* smartphones, as well as Nokia phones with WebRuntime installed.

Doctor’s Associates, the parent company of SUBWAY, and Think Computer Corporation have announced that FaceCash will now be accepted at certain SUBWAY locations in California. FaceCash is a mobile payment system that allows consumers to use their cell phones to make purchases at the point of sale. “FaceCash gets its name from its unique security process. During a purchase, the consumer’s face appears on the merchant’s register to verify identity.”

MTN Group, the leading mobile operator in Africa and the Middle East, and Western Union have announced a commercial agreement to introduce international mobile remittance services in the 21 countries where MTN operates. This will allow MTN subscribers to send and receive Western Union Money Transfer transactions using their MTN MobileMoney accounts.

Mitek has announced a new app that lets users pay bills with their smartphone camera. After establishing online-bill-payment arrangements as part of their banking account, users of Mobile Photo Bill Pay can initiate e-bill-payment sessions on their smartphones, then simply snap photos of the bills they want to pay, verify the payment information and click on the app’s “PAY” button. The app eliminates the hassle of users setting up information for individual payee accounts because Mitek technology extracts the data from the photo image and automatically provides it to the financial institution’s bill-processing system in the required format.
